Busan Mayor Visits Prestige Biopharma IDC to Support Regional Bioindustry Growth
Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon visited the Innovative Discovery Center (IDC) of Prestige Biopharma as part of the city’s “Policy After-Service” initiative aimed at supporting companies that have made major investments in the region.
The visit was organized to hear directly from local companies about operational challenges and support needs while exploring ways to provide tailored policy assistance and regulatory improvements that can help businesses continue to grow after making investments in Busan.
During the visit, Mayor Park toured the Prestige Biopharma IDC facility and expressed appreciation for the company’s significant foreign investment and the successful establishment of the city’s first biopharmaceutical R&D center.
Opened in November of last year, the Innovative Discovery Center is the first biopharmaceutical research center in Busan established with foreign investment and one of the largest facilities of its kind in Korea. The center was built on a site of approximately 31,000 square meters and consists of a six-story building with one basement level.
Since its opening, the center has focused on the development of antibody-based biopharmaceuticals, including innovative antibody therapeutics and biosimilars. The facility integrates key capabilities spanning drug discovery, clinical development, commercialization, and manufacturing within a single ecosystem.
Prestige Biopharma IDC is staffed by a highly specialized research workforce, with more than 86% of researchers holding master’s or doctoral degrees. The institute has also introduced advanced research equipment and technology platforms to support its innovative drug development programs.
Mayor Park stated that the city will continue to support companies that invest in the region and contribute to economic growth and job creation. He emphasized that Busan will strengthen its “Policy After-Service” framework to ensure that businesses receive ongoing support and can confidently expand their investments in the city.
He added that investment is not the end of a process but rather the beginning of a long-term partnership, and that the city will remain a reliable partner for companies seeking to establish and grow their operations in Busan.
