Diagnostics for Pancreatic cancer by detecting PAUF
Prestige Biopharma Files Patent for Early Pancreatic Cancer Diagnostic Technology
Prestige Biopharma (KRX: 950210), which is developing the world’s first pancreatic cancer diagnostic kit based on the PAUF biomarker, announced that its research arm, Prestige Biopharma IDC, has filed a new patent related to pancreatic cancer patient screening technology.
According to the company, the patent covers a “Composition for Immunohistochemical Staining of PAUF Protein Containing Anti-PAUF Monoclonal Antibodies and Its Use.” Prestige Biopharma IDC filed the patent application as part of its efforts to advance early diagnostic technologies for pancreatic cancer.
The patented technology relates to an immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining composition containing monoclonal antibodies that specifically bind to the PAUF protein, as well as methods for detecting PAUF expression in tissue samples. Compared with previously proposed PAUF staining methods, the new technology significantly improves staining sensitivity and clarity, enabling more accurate and reliable detection of PAUF protein expression.
PAUF (Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Up-regulated Factor) is a proprietary therapeutic target discovered by Prestige Biopharma and is known to be overexpressed in more than 80% of pancreatic cancer patients. It plays a critical role in tumor progression and metastasis. The ability to rapidly and accurately detect PAUF expression in cancer tissues could enable earlier diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and facilitate timely targeted treatment.
Through this patent, the company plans to further develop diagnostic technologies based on PAUF-specific immunohistochemical staining. In parallel, Prestige Biopharma is also accelerating the development of diagnostic kits capable of detecting PAUF in blood samples with high sensitivity and specificity, aiming to introduce early screening tools for pancreatic cancer patients.
Chairwoman Soyeon Park of Prestige Biopharma Group previously emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, stating that “early detection of pancreatic cancer—often referred to as a silent cancer—is just as urgent as the development of effective treatments. A PAUF-based diagnostic kit has the potential to significantly improve survival rates through early diagnosis.”
Pancreatic cancer incidence continues to rise worldwide. According to national cancer registry statistics from 2019, pancreatic cancer ranked eighth among all cancer types in incidence, with a survival rate of only 13.9%. Global projections also suggest that pancreatic cancer could become the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States by 2030. Despite this growing burden, effective targeted therapies and reliable early diagnostic methods remain limited, highlighting a significant unmet medical need.
Prestige Biopharma’s pancreatic cancer antibody therapeutic PBP1510 is expected to enter Phase 2a clinical trials this year. The company is actively pursuing a comprehensive pancreatic cancer treatment ecosystem encompassing diagnosis, therapy, and prevention.
Chairwoman Soyeon Park stated, “By establishing a PAUF-based pancreatic cancer solution, we aim to build an integrated system for conquering pancreatic cancer and position Prestige Biopharma as a global pharmaceutical company with a corporate value of KRW 30 trillion by 2030.”
